Put It Out Of Its Misery

You were driving in the rain when all of a sudden a kitten or puppy or some kind of cute animal runs out on the road in front of and you hit it, you slam on the brakes and come to a halt but you can hear the animal isn't dead, conveniently you have a shovel you keep in the back seat for just such an occasion.

ROOM 1:

Open the door to Room 1 and you get out of the car to put that poor animal to peace by beating it with a shovel until it dies.

ROOM 2:

Open the door to Room 2 and you just drive off and leave it suffering on the road.

Door 2.

Yeah, I'm not really an animal person. I wouldn't like to put in the effort of bludgeoning it to death myself, but I wouldn't feel too bad about leaving it behind. Actually, I've probably done stuff like this before (kangeroos can be cute, right? I've hit a few of those ...)

The Agony of Choice

You have been kidnapped and placed in a Room, the door is locked and there is a letter and knife on a table in front of you. The letter says you have two choices, you can stab yourself in the hand and we will open the door or you may stab yourself in the leg and we will open the door.

ROOM 1:

Open the door to Room 1 and you stab yourself in the hand.

ROOM 2:

Open the door to Room 2 and you stab yourself in the leg.

Well, if I'm the one doing the stabbing it should be fairly easy to pass the stabbed threshold without doing any permanent damage.

Trust me, I've done some stabbing in my time.

Open door 2, since there's less that could go wrong.

Hmm; interesting. I immediately think 'my hand is really fragile', so I'm leaning towards Room 2 (but not as hard as I'll be leaning with a wound in my leg ohoho); yet there's something in me that is squeamish about a knife into a big muscle.

But I'm getting stabbed anyway, so I should try to remove that major discomfort from my considerations.

Room 1. It I stab between the carpals, I shouldn't be doing all that much damage (considering); and I'll still have one good hand. Plus I'll have to walk on my legs, but I don't have to do anything with my wounded hand.

And don't think I failed to notice that the door opening was only promised in a letter, not part of the room's rules...

there's less that could go wrong in stabbing your leg (you have arteries in your legs you know that righ?)

Is that aside comment meant to be supporting the main point?

And the arteries are probably the rational reason for being squeamish about stabbing the muscle. Good work, subconscious!

but obviously it is much harder to repair any damage done to the hand (mainly because of it's balance between delicate structure and major usage)
