Note: isn't dwark fortress 3D?
Someone described minecraft as lego-like. Then Lokstat said the Black Eyed Peas film clip for The Time looked a little like it.
Carry on.

More like dwarf fortress, but you do all the work by hand, (and have exploding zombies everywhere).

Also, I just did some fancy maths, and after allowing $1.5 million for server costs and living costs, the guy who made Minecraft has around $25 million just sitting around. I wonder what would happen if he were to quit now?

Re: Minecraft, anyone play it?
Alright, fine, I give in, can I try someone's account please?
I watched some videos of it, and then wake up this morning after being exploded by a creeper/mob/whatever (after failing to gather enough gecko jelly to make a house , but we'll leave my warped psychology out of this).
I tried the Classic version, but it's too unstructured for my uncreative mind. I think having the threat of death pushing me on might help.
If I find out I'm addicted, I'll probably buy it (strong AUD, hooray), otherwise I'll go back to other stuff, find something else.
As for resplect server - that's difficult. None of us has a static IP, so it would be very difficult to set up and then maintain. I, and probably most of you as well, have a router between my PC and the internet, which is another configuration hurdle. We'd also all need individual accounts . Edit: Apparently you can multiplayer with classic, which would achieve all that we need (what's missing, besides monsters?). Still need the server though.
First things first, get me addicted. Please?

Re: Minecraft, anyone play it?
OK, been fiddling with the server program. I can get it to run from this machine (already dug a pit below the spawn point ), but since I can't set up port forwarding (long story), I can't get any external connections.
If anyone else wants to try, I can write up what I did, and why the README instructions are outdated.

Re: Minecraft, anyone play it?
It is done. Don't ask questions, just accept it.
Instructions to access the Resplect Server
1 Log in to your Minecraft account (create one if you don't have one, it's free)
2 Go to this page, (minecraft.net/servers.jsp).
3 Look for (Ctrl+F) "Resplect"
4 Click on the server name, it will load in your browser window
5 ???
6 Profit!!
There are a few things that could go wrong here:
minecraft.net doesn't load - too bad, try again later. Expect this.
Resplect Server doesn't appear on the list - try again in 3 minutes (after the list refreshes).
If it still doesn't appear, it means it's not running. Post here to organise a time for it to be run (yay group activities).
It appears, but it says "It's probably down" instead of loading. Some connection issue, I'll fiddle around with it.
Minecraft crashes in the browser - update Java and graphics drivers (I found this problem running from an outdated live USB on another computer, shouldn't be a problem for you).
I'll probably put some effort into the world (like writing my name in the sky - complete, or working out how to add moderators and eject griefers, since it's a public server - incomplete). Had someone go on there today and they erased my name before I kicked them .

QUINTUPLE POST
I've been playing around with our world, exploring caves and building diving platforms (top of the world to the bottom), as well as carving caves of my own.
Do we want a flat world to build on, or leave it with hills, caves and lakes?

Re: Minecraft, anyone play it?
I'm currently using the vanilla software, so a lot of options aren't available (anyone can dig out of a spawn jail ). Which would you recommend? I saw MCLawl mentioned fairly often, but I don't know.
Also, it's running off a Linux box, so no .exes.
Edit: Been reading about MCLawl, and it's a lot more complicated (and assumedly hardware demanding). While it does run on linux, it needs a MySQL server set up, which I'd need to learn. XAMPP is recommended, but I'd need to compile from source (after it finishes downloading). Onwards, to a better server!

OK, I have a MCLawl server running. Put your usernames here so I can give you build permissions (in case I'm not there when you get online).
Mine's Alex_Steiner
Currently trying to generate a hilly, treed, interesting world (I've found it easier to be inspired when I have something to work with).

Re: Minecraft, anyone play it?
I have now designed a more elegant solution than a spawn jail. Guests cannot place or remove any type of block. They are free to wander around, but can't ruin stuff (or flatten the sculpted island to a formless plain).
Does someone want to test this? Edit: Tested
Taken from the top corner of the world. FPS was rather low as it rendered the whole map (I normally have medium fog to speed things up).
As you can see, moderately mountainous island. The land could be bigger, but it stuck ocean there. I wonder what we can do with it (ideas ). Haven't explored underground, should be cave systems.
The spawn is on the sand island below centre left. I could have circled it, but I'm too lazy.
The tower in the middle is mine, three storey, with glass windows all around. No access to roof though, but apparently you can place stairs in this version with the right code.
Apparently we can have multiple maps, so I'll start by trying to add the old map (it's in a different file format though, so bear with me).
Update: The old map is in an incompatible format, but I can restart the old server if anyone really wants to see it. It's much bigger than this one, but with less features.
I've created examples of the map types available, flat, forest, mountains, pixel and island. Use "/goto <mapname>" to use them. You might need to load them onto server first using the /load command.
Just because you can, do not place "active_water" and "active_lava" tiles. They create an infinitely expanding and unstoppable wave of aforementioned substance. It doesn't just run down the walls, it expands in a continuous wall outwards from source, filling the world to that level. Even if you destroy the first tile, the new tiles act the same way. See the mountains map for reference, where it crashed the physics mid-wave, and crashed minecraft.
Do we want physics on? It makes sand, gravel water and lava fall (and spread out in the case of the latter two), but creates risks. It can be toggled for individual maps, so we can decide later.

Still interested in trying single player on the beta. Just for a few days.
