Died on my first night - not from lack of coal, but from stupidity. I got cocky (I had a stone sword!), and got exploded. All my items gone, I had to run from the spawn to the shelter. I realised I could damage the mobs through the door without danger, so I've collected some thread, arrows, bones, sulfur and feathers.

Used the furnace to make charcoal instead of mining for actual coal.

My shelter now has glass windows and a chest to keep the valuables (everything I had when I died is just gone). It's also slightly bigger.

Expedition for a good spot to settle permanently begins daybreak on day 3.

Also, good news is it doesn't use as much bandwidth as a I thought, only a few MB over the course of an hour.

Do you want to do some collaborative survival?

...although that's heaps easier if you have audio between players (eg Skype).

Not too interested in multiplayer beta yet, personally. I'm still working through the quirks of single player. Died repeatadly, right outside my shelter, just because I get bored (and a whole bunch of cows and pigs were wandering past in the middle of the night, no mobs in sight. Then as soon as I open the door stab a pig, 3 skeletons and a zombie appear.

I still have trouble controlling first person games, I couldn't get through the door (kept sliding past it).

Found some coal, but I still predominantly use charcoal. Related: My first bunch of saplings just matured, and I still have 50 in my chest. One tree's death produces 5-10 saplings.

I have lost absolutely everything. All I have is what you see there. Chests have wool, feathers, eggs, saplings and string; that's it. After I got asploded, I came back and there was nothing there . Blew out my glass windows, and destroyed my front wall.

Luckily there's a large crater out front and you can't get in without jumping over a gap, so I'm safe until morning. Then I start punching trees all over again...

Edit: I just migrated my game to Linux, so I started a new world. First act? Build a 5x5 wooden shack on the beach right next to the spawn and surround it by torches.

I'm yet to read the whole post, but I already see some limitations. Since Minecraft uses a flat-world approximation, the Earth doesn't map to 1 metre cubes very well. As you can see, it takes just as long to walk around (along?) the equator as at the poles. Anywhere outside the tropics will be noticeably stretched east to west. Edit: Apparently one cube is one cubic nautical mile. And Antarctica is larger than Asia O_O .

Why haven't I read the whole post? I clicked "full projection" link. Apparently 2GB of RAM isn't enough to hold a 25600x10800 image, and Firefox froze up and crashed. My screen has a little over 2 million pixels, that image would need over 100 screens the size of mine to display it all without zooming.

So, for the first time ever, I filled up my entire RAM, and my 1GB of swap space (aka virtual memory), slowing operations to a crawl. Apparently Firefox is inefficient with large images, probably loading it for download, for saving and for displaying. It technically didn't freeze, but glaciers were moving faster.

I'll read the whole post without the image now.

OK, downloaded the pixel map without displaying it, opened it after closing Firefox. Here's my RAM usage:

You can see where it hit the RAM cap, and loaded some in swap space. Did some zooming, then closed it. It's a 25MB png. I'm not going to try the actual map .

I love the map. I dl'ed it. Currently flying across Australia bombing where toowoomba should be.
